The Sumatran elephant is a subspecies of Asian elephant that is native to the Indonesian island of Sumatra. In 2011, the Sumatran elephant was recognized as critically endangered by the IUCN, as their population has decreased 80% over the last three generations. They are primarily threatened by habitat loss, degradation and fragmentation, and poaching by humans. Over 69% of potential elephant habitat has been lost over the last 25 years. Much of the remaining forest cover is now in blocks that are too small to contain viable elephant populations.
