OVERVIEW
The Amazon River dolphin lives exclusively in freshwater and is found throughout much of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. It is relatively common, with populations estimated to be in the tens of thousands. However, certain areas have it classified as vulnerable due to dams that can fragment and threaten local populations, as well as other threats such as contamination of rivers and lakes.

- Among the five species of river dolphins, Amazon River dolphins are considered to be the most intelligent of them, with a brain capacity 40% larger than that of humans.
- Amazon River dolphins can have several different skin tones, ranging from pink to light grey to brown.
- Most Amazon River dolphins are almost blind due to their navigating muddy waters. Despite this, they are considered to have relatively good eyesight compared to other river dolphins.
- The scientific name of the Amazon River dolphin is Inia Geoffrensis.
